Andrei and some guy.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010002.jpg>
Our food that we eventually got at the nice non-smoking bar-restaurant where no one could speak English nor take any orders correctly in general.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010003.jpg>
Peter and Tore.
Peter got that spoon to eat with...
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010004.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010005.jpg>
Peter, Pontus and Tore waiting for the trip to Chernobyl outside our hotel.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010006.jpg>
Hedda, Pontus and Tore.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010007.jpg>
And the Polish gang... I need some help with names here, because I only remember Agata.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010008.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010009.jpg>
The entrance to the zone. See Zone of alienation for more info.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010010.jpg>
It says "Welcome! Get your mutations here!"
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010011.jpg>
It's very green.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010012.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010013.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010014.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010015.jpg>
"Chornobil'" is the Ukrainian name, and "Chernobyl" the Russian name. Same mess with two names on most towns all over Ukraine.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010016.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010017.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010018.jpg>
The houses are covered in trees.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010019.jpg>
Yet another house abandoned for 20 years and looted.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010020.jpg>
Some houses are still used though. 5000 people work in the zone. Most of them will die very young because they smoke like chimneys.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010021.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010022.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010023.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010024.jpg>
A map over the zone.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010025.jpg>
We had to sign something that we promised to not touch anything or steal, leave the group or something like that.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010026.jpg>
The machine that checked our hands and feet for radiation.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010028.jpg>
The agreement. Unreadable.
<imgr300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010029.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010030.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010031.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010032.jpg>
A nice place to park some stuff...
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010033.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010034.jpg>
A cemetery. Birds singing everywhere and beetles where mating all over the walkway.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010035.jpg>
A Chernobyl bird. Not that shy.
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010036.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010037.jpg>
A Chernobyl cat.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010038.jpg>
The same cat.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010039.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010040.jpg>

<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010046.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010047.jpg>
Some old ships and some water that actually is clean. Well, at least when it comes to radiation.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010048.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010049.jpg>
The like to have pipes everywhere. They where built for heating after the disaster.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010050.jpg>
The monument for the firefighters who saved the world by putting out the fire on the roof and died because of it.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010051.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010052.jpg>

<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010059.jpg>
Agata and our guide.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010062.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010063.jpg>

<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010065.jpg>
The sarcophagus
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010066.jpg>
Another monument and the sarcophagus in the background.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010067.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010068.jpg>

<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010071.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010072.jpg>
Pripyat'
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010074.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010075.jpg>
Very Soviet style buildings from the 80s.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010076.jpg>
We were allowed to go inside one building.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010077.jpg>
This is the entrance hall of the hotel. The reception staff is unfortunately out for lunch...
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010078.jpg>
The beds might need some paint, but a hotel without staff can't really do such things.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010079.jpg>
The view from the top floors is wonderful!
<imgr300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010080.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010081.jpg>
The rooms are light, green and you have running water right in the center of the room!
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010082.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010083.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010084.jpg>
<imgr300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010085.jpg>
[hedda] and a tree that grows straight out of the concrete.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010086.jpg>
How come my plants die of bad soil when all you apparently need is some stone and concrete to make trees grow?
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010087.jpg>
That's a tree grown up with a great view.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010088.jpg>
Growing in tar seems to work just as fine as concrete.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010089.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010090.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010091.jpg>
That art was actually pained before the disaster to make people happy... (Update: No it wasn't. Some people did it afterward)
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010092.jpg>
Yea, very similar!
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010093.jpg>
Let's stand in high places and risk falling down!
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010094.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010095.jpg>
A new tree.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010096.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010097.jpg>
[hedda] at top of the Pripyat Hotel.
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010098.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010099.jpg>
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010100.jpg>
Peter
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010101.jpg>
Don't step on the moss! It's highly radioactive as it somehow collects the radioactivity.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010102.jpg>
An amusement park for mandatory Soviet fun.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010103.jpg>
That's real radio cars...
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010104.jpg>
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010105.jpg>
This sling is a few years late for a safety inspection.
<imgl300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010106.jpg>
This seems to be working quite fine though. There were birds living inside the baskets.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010107.jpg>
The dangerous moss. There is a very busy ant-hole right below the image, but the ants totally avoid the moss. I don't know if it was because of the radioactivity or because they had no reason to go there, but ant go everywhere so I think they avoided the moss because it is killing them.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010108.jpg>
That's one happy girl... Or is it a boy?

<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010116.jpg>
Back at the administration center in Chernobyl. A cat has taken a trip inside and poses for the camera a little before being led out.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010117.jpg>
We got a huge meal. They said that it wasn't local food... This is the first course.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010118.jpg>
Second and third course.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010119.jpg>

Andrei, Peter, Tore, Pontus.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010125.jpg>
Back to the hotel we took one taxi. This is four big men squeezed into the back seat of the taxi. We had to breath on turns...
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010126.jpg>
Back at the non-smoking bar.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010127.jpg>

We counting coins...
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010139.jpg>
... to give to the hostel manager so that he can change a 200-bill.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010141.jpg>
A typical Kiev house.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010142.jpg>
There is way too much traffic in Kiev and people drive like car-thieves and they don't give a shit about security. We saw 4 car-crashes in our short stay in Kiev.
<img300*0:stuff/z/1/Chernobyl2008/p1010143.jpg>
