Creation

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1

Even if you aren't a Christian, I'm sure you know this verse and what it means; that God created the heavens and the earth right? But what does that entail? First, I should inform you that when we explore this, you must remember the culture and context everything was written. Although it may not mean the same, or have such a defined definition today, in the days the Torah (the Jewish Bible and the Old Testement of the Christian Bible) was written, they were written using words that had a very precise meaning. Just because those words don't mean the same thing in modern day cannot take away the significance of their origional meaning. So, when we say the heavens today, most people think of the sky. In this context, heaven is used to refer to the cosmos. Just as God created the earth specifically, He also created the heavens, or everything else other than the earth. (For those of you who are lost; the Universe and everything in it.) Though there was nothing in the cosmos except for the planets themselves at this point, He still created them. (Can you see why I believe God created life on other planets as well? Even though the Bible gives no indication whatsoever pertaining to even the smallest hint of extraterrestial life, if He created all this He did so for a reason. And do you not think God has a sense of humour or imagination? Look at the platapus! I mean comeone, if God can create the platatus I'm sure He'd have the imagination to create little green men!) Genesis 1-2 tells us how He goes on to create everything else in creation. Now, this is not the place for an evolution vs. creation debate. I'm just telling you the way it is. It really doesn't matter if you believe God created the Earth in 6 literal days or if it was 6 eons, ages, etc. The point is that Genesis is giving us an account of WHO created the world. Genesis was written at a time when there was no science, no need to prove everything through theory and experiments and jusification. It was written by the first of God's servents who had enough education to record it for the people, which was Moses. We will discuss that later though. For now, the main point of Genesis is not to say how in exact detail with what exact mindset God created the world. It tells us that God created the world and humans for the purpose of communion and relation with Him and that He was very pleased with His creation for ALL of creation was deemed "Very good" (Genesis 1:31) Genesis 1 provides the answers of Who, What and Why. The When is not as important, since we know it happened! When the Holocaust occurred in history is not important; what is important is What is was, Who caused it and Why. The same applies to the Genesis account.
