"An agnostic is one who believes that knowledge of God is impossible."
(Webster's Universal Dictionary and Thesaurus)
Agnostic is the combination of "a-"; not-, and "gnostic"; knowing. Therefore they should not be confused with the "Gnostici", an early christian sect seeking salvation by knowledge, not faith.
Agnosticism states that if "a God" exists, "He/She/It" can not be known, because our minds cannot contain the true concept of "God", since "He/She/It" transcends our physical realm and/or mental capacities of understanding. Therefore all claims on the existence of "God", be it that "He/She/It" exists or does not exist, or even about the fashion in which "He/She/It" exists, are nonsensical.
Some Agnosts would even state that if "God" would exist, even thinking about "Him/Her/It" in a conceptual way would be utterly blasphemious. Since it would degrade "God" to a thing.
This makes Agnosticism more of a philosophical expression than a religion. Since it renounces formal expressions of faith. Maybe it should be called an Anti-religion?
